The Visual Arts Department aims to stimulate creativity and imagination and encourage individuality within an interesting and inspiring environment. Through the exploration of the formal elements and a range of different materials and processes to communicate what they see, feel and think, students learn to make informed judgements and aesthetic and practical decisions. They learn about the diverse roles and functions of art, craft and design in contemporary life as well as different times and cultures. With an emphasis placed on process, problem solving and practical skills which stimulate curiosity, interest and enjoyment, students achieve understanding, appreciation and fascination of the visual arts.
Art & Design lessons will investigate the broad variety of disciplines within the department – Fine Art, Graphic Design, Photography, 3D and Textiles. Students will explore their ideas of perception and observation with an emphasis on basic drawing skills and colour theory. Projects will also have strong cross-curricular links with subjects such as IT, English, History and Media. Day trips to galleries and museums provide the basis for projects in the classrooms.
Various day trips are organised relating to specific projects throughout the year.
